Activity Title: Tea Consent Video Discussion |
Suggested Grade/Age Range: Grades 7-8 |
Activity Objective: The objective of this activity is to explore the concept and process of consent through the Tea Consent video. |
Materials Required: Access to a computer and a screen for projecting Tea Consent Video |
Prep Time: 10 minutes Have video ready and projected on screen Task Time: 30-40 minutes |
Activity Description: 1. Review over the definition and process of consent (use FRIES) 2. Tell the class that they will be watching a video about the consent process where it has been compared to inviting someone to drink tea. Acknowledge that the video talks about consent from the perspective of consent for sexual activity, but encourage youth to think about how this applies to a lot of different behaviours/activities that involve seeking and giving consent 3. Show youth Tea Consent Video (link below) 4. Have a whole class discussion around the video:
· Acknowledge that when relating to another person, it is more complex and sometimes there are grey areas that we are not sure how to navigate (refer back to the ‘obstacles around consent’ explored in the first activity) · The purpose of the Tea Consent Video is to demonstrate that regardless of how “grey” a situation might seem, it is always necessary to seek consent and to go through the entire consent process (think FRIES) otherwise it would be as ridiculous (even if it did not feel like that in the moment) as forcing someone to drink tea when they don’t actually want it Is there anything else around the video you would like to discuss? |
Activity Extensions: Have individuals design skits or comic strips incorporating the consent process. They can illustrate when the consent process goes awry and how to properly go about it or how to successfully navigate consent in the first place. These can then be presented to the class or to other classes Have individuals write a personal journal reflection on their thoughts about the video and how it has impacted their understanding of the consent process |
Additional Comments: Refer back to the definition and process of consent covered in the Overview and Discussion Questions when introducing this activity and facilitating the discussion. You may choose to write the FRIES acronym on the board to refer to during the discussion |
Additional Resources: Consent Tea Video (clean version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGoWLWS4-kU The facilitator may choose to read more about the FRIES model by Planned Parenthood here: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/teens/sex/all-about-consent Note: The model is discussed around the consent process for sexual activity, which is important to acknowledge, but the conversation can be generalized to consenting in other activities or behaviours – the foundation is around teaching youth to establish health boundaries when relating to different individuals in all types of relationships. |
